Description

The book discusses tritium - the radioactive isotope of hydrogen (3H). it is important because it is the most commonly-experienced radionuclide, as a vital component in thermonuclear weapons. Large amounts were released into the atmosphere during the nuclear weapons tests in the 1950s and 1960s, and are still circulating to a limited extent. Tritium would be the main fuel in proposed nuclear fusion plants, and would be released in huge quantities if these ever were built and operated. And large amounts are still being routinely released to nearby environments from nuclear power plants, whether civil or military (including nuclear-propelled submarines).

Biography

Author(s):  Dr. Ian Fairlie is an independent consultant on radioactivity in the environment with degrees in chemistry and radiation biology. His doctoral research focused on nuclear waste policies. Dr. Fairlie has extensive experience advising on the health effects of ionizing radiation, most notably serving as chief scientific advisor to the British Government's Committee Examining Radiation Risks from Internal Emitters (CERRIE).
